Iowans are hurting because he started a trade war with China for political reasons, not because he was serious about advocating for working families or dealing with China as a bad actor, which it is. Five days before the first Congressional special election in 2018 (Conor Lamb, PA-17) Trump announced steel and aluminum tariffs in hopes of keeping steel country red. China retaliated a month and a half after Trump's tweet. They focused directly on Iowa, my family and my neighbors, and they placed tariffs on corn, soybeans, and pork. It will take decades for us to recover. Since President Trump didn't have a plan to begin with, he continues to escalate, like he did today, and China keeps calling his bluff. Families in Iowa's rural towns and bigger cities are being devastated by tariffs. From plummeting corn and soybean prices to taxes on consumer goods. If President Trump actually cared about holding China accountable for stealing intellectual property and seeds, then he would've worked with our allies to take on China as one powerful group. Instead he went at it alone to score some cheap short-term political points -- allowing China to counter-punch the U.S. and Iowa. I have always promised to work with anyone if it helped Iowa and stand up to anyone who hurts us. I stand by that promise and hope for a brighter future for my state and my country with leadership who does the same. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
