The grant program aims to increase the number of commercial driver's license (CDL) holders who receive enhanced operator safety training, and to help current and former military members and their spouses and children to transition into commercial motor vehicles operating careers. I'm excited Hawkeye Community College will receive this funding to continue developing the truck driver workforce in Iowa while also helping out our military families, Congresswoman Finkenauer said, This is the third year Hawkeye has received this grant and I'm happy that it will help the college's program continue. Dr. Todd Holcomb, president of Hawkeye Community College, said, "Hawkeye Community College is excited about the opportunity this federal grantprovides to train our local veterans and help fill a driver shortage in a state with one ofthe lowest unemployment rates in the nation.Hawkeye will be able to expand our veteran services to serve 25 veterans and their spouse or children covering 100% of the program costs to obtain a commercial driver's license." Programs like those at Hawkeye Community College can provide career opportunities to Iowans while growing the truck driver workforce. According to the American Trucking Association, there were 60,800 fewer than needed truck drivers on the road in 2018.
