In August, members of the community learned that the Social Security Administration might close the Decorah field office and explore ways to offer to services remotely through videoconferencing. If the Social Security Administration moves forward with this approach, beneficiaries may no longer be able to have an in-person meeting with trained staff in Decorah, Iowa. After hearing from community members worried about the closure, Rep. Finkenauer decided to write to the Social Security Administration to express these concerns and get the facts for Social Security beneficiaries in Northeast Iowa. I not only ask that you provide additional information on the circumstances surrounding the closure but urge you to consider ways to ensure that the in-person services provided at this field office remain available in Northeast Iowa Finkenauer wrote to Saul, Social Security is a promise to the American people and part of that means ensuring that these critical services remain available to those who need them. The Decorah office serves beneficiaries from Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, many of whom drive hours to for an in-person meeting with trained staff, as opposed to handling claims or appeals online. Decorah Mayor Lorraine Borowski said, While changing the service model at our local Social Security office may seem inconsequential on paper, it will have a deep impact on people in our community, and those who travel to our community, who rely on the office. I want to thank Congresswoman Finkenauer for calling attention to this issue and for pushing the federal government to act in the best interest of her constituents. I'm hoping this leads to the Social Security Administration committing to keep the Decorah office staffed so we can ease the anxiety many of our beneficiaries are feeling over potential changes.
