The announcement comes at the conclusion of a rigorous interview and selection process that included the input of a committee of diverse Nebraskans, including military leaders and community members. “Congratulations to this new generation of Nebraskans who are stepping up to serve in our nation’s Armed Forces. It’s an honor to nominate each of these outstanding young Nebraskans to our Military Service Academies,” said Congressman Flood. “I also offer my sincere gratitude to the committee who helped review the applications of each of these outstanding nominees.” The committee members include retired U.S. Brigadier General Roma Amundson of Lincoln (AUS), Kent Smith of Howells (USAF), Dave Merritt of Norfolk (USN), Col. Fred Phelan of Lincoln (USAF), and Col. Robert J. Newbauer of Omaha (USACE). The committee worked diligently to examine each applicant’s understanding of the nature of the Military Service Academies, the role of Officers in the Armed Forces, the applicant’s desire to serve, their academic records, and their ability to communicate effectively in a high stakes environment. With the input of the committee, Congressman Mike Flood nominated applicants that met the rigorous academic and physical requirements of the Military Service Academies. There are five U.S. Military Service Academies: U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The office received no applications for nomination to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
