Following the National Congress, Xi Jinping, China’s President, was set to serve a third term. “The CCP’s 20th Congress underscored Xi Jinping’s ironclad grip on power in China as the country’s de facto emperor,” stated Congressman Flood. “From technology to trade, the CCP continues to think years ahead of many countries as they seek to achieve an ambitious agenda around the world. In their pursuits, their leadership perceives few barriers to achieving their goals as they commit human rights abuses against minority populations, crack down on pro-democracy interests in Hong Kong, and encroach on Taiwan. As we look to the future, the United States must be strategic and take action to re-shore supply chains, protect our intellectual property, and strengthen our ability to defend our interests in the Pacific Rim.” The CCP’s National Congress occurs every five years. Congressman Flood recently called on the U.S. Department of Commerce to investigate the use of Huawei hardware in cell towers located in Nebraska. Huawei has deep ties to the CCP and could pose a substantial national security threat due to the technology’s proximity to military installations in Nebraska.
