| https://fortenberry.house.gov/news/fort-report/fort-report-farm-future | Fort Report: Farm of the Future | 2020-09-11 | 2020 | 2020-09 | Republican | House | NE | Jeff Fortenberry | F000449 | fortenberry.house.gov | legacy | Last week, the Ag Secretary came to town. I invited Sonny Perdue to learn how we in Nebraska are pioneering what I call the Farm of the Future. Large-scale production agriculture remains the mainstay of the Cornhusker Statewe feed America, we feed the world. We are also, however, pioneering new forms of small-scale niche agriculture that marry hi-tech with hi-touch to connect the farmer to the family, the rural to the urban, and the farm to the table. At a roundtable discussion at the Great Plains Beef campus in Lincoln last Friday, I introduced Secretary Perdue to a diverse range of Nebraska ag innovators. From farm-to-school leaders to direct-to-consumer pioneers, urban farms to precision ag, to dairy farms using robotics to expand yield at lower cost, the Farm of the Future is nimble, fast, yet intimate, allowing persons to know and appreciate the provenance of their food. With U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue. Zemua Baptista, independent poultry producer raising over two million birds a year for sale to Costco, with Sarah Smith, local foods consultant at the Nebraska Department of Education, and organizer of the annual Farm-to-School Crunch-Off, which Nebraska won last year. With University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts, Ag Secretary Perdue, and (to left of Chancellor Green), Steve Wellman, Director, Nebraska Department of Agriculture. Alex McKiernan, Co-owner, Robinette Farms, producer of certified organic greens and microgreens. Joe Brugger, who, with his brother Matt, run Upstream Farms, a farm-to-table pioneer. From left: Doug Bartek (corn and soybean farmer), Sarah Smith (Nebraska Department of Education), Tim Rinne (Co-founder, Hawley Hamlet Neighborhood Garden), Alex McKiernan (Co-owner, Robinette Farms), Dan Lambe (President, Arbor Day Foundation), Brant Burkey (Co-founder, RealmFive Agriculture). I am so honored that the Secretary of Agriculture took time out of his busy schedule to visit us here in the Heartland. What we are doing in Farm Country is the very essence of America. We are a community that cares, that works hard, that produces something intimate and elementalour nation's food. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
