Today is the final day of National Adoption Month, and this year’s work on pro-family tax reform has only further bolstered my belief that the love of a family is a true gift, and one that is worth protecting. The Saturday before Thanksgiving is National Adoption Day. Families across the United States become larger and their hearts fuller because of the gift of adoption. With a promise to love and care for them, men and women of all walks of life finalize their adoptions, welcoming children into their forever families. In my role as co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth and the Congressional Coalition on Adoption, I’ve had the honor and privilege of witnessing this special moment and advocating for so many who are still trying to get there. Being in Congress, and having the trust of the people who sent us to serve them in the People’s House is a responsibility my colleagues and I take very seriously. Every vote, every decision, is made with them in mind. That’s why our tax reform bill, the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, is focused on helping American families get ahead, when for too long we’ve had a tax code that barely lets them get by. With our legislation, which passed out of the House shortly before Thanksgiving, the average family of four would see a tax cut of $1,182. In my home state of Arizona, that amount is even larger: $2,170. We expand 529 savings accounts so parents are able to pay for education throughout their children’s lives, from kindergarten to college. We eliminate the marriage penalty, and repeal the Death Tax that unfairly punishes families for passing their farms and small businesses down to their children. Our bill expands the Child Tax Credit to $1,600 to help families better cover life’s expenses. By doubling the standard deduction, married couples can keep even more of their income — the first $24,000 are tax-free. We preserve the Adoption Credit, and establish a new Family Flexibility Credit. If two people in a family file taxes, this new Family Credit means $600 more in their annual income. That can make a big difference. And we unleash the American economy so that there are more opportunities to find work, grow businesses, and dream for a better tomorrow for you and your families. Our work isn’t finished, and we still have so many young people in need of forever families, but as National Adoption Month draws to a close, my heart is full of hope. I’m excited to see what the future holds for these families of all shapes and sizes. They, like so many others, are why I’m working with my colleagues to get tax reform to the President’s desk by the end of the year. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
