Tulsi Gabbard: FCCs Ruling Is Important Milestone for Online Privacy 2016-10-28 2016 2016-10 Democrat House HI Tulsi Gabbard G000571 gabbard.house.gov     legacy Honolulu, HIRep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) released the statement below following the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) ruling that restricts how Internet providers use and sell customer data: "Our privacy and civil liberties protections have not kept up with the rapid expansion of technology in today's digital age. As a result, corporations have largely gone unchecked, raking in billions by selling personal data without consent from consumers. The FCC's ruling gives Americans a say in how their personal and private data is used, and lays the groundwork for us to continue strengthening online privacy protections." Background: Yesterday, the FCC ruled 3-2 that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are required to get opt-in consent from consumers before they can collect and use consumers' personal data, which includes Web browsing history, app usage, health and financial information, geolocations, and the content of online communications. The new rules require service providers to tell consumers what data they collect and why, as well as to take steps to notify customers of data breaches. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a founding member of the Fourth Amendment Caucus, has been a champion for strengthening privacy and civil liberties protections in the digital age. She has introduced legislation to strengthen the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB) and cosponsored legislation like the Electronic Communications Privacy Amendments Act and Email Privacy Act to modernize electronic privacy laws. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
