Greg Gianforte, R-Mont., helped the House passthe United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)on Thursday, the new trade deal that will replace NAFTA, but expressed frustration that it took Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi so long to bring it up for a vote. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the measure 385-41, the day after the House voted to impeach President Donald Trump. Gianforte, Montana's lone member of the House, joined fellow Republicans in opposing impeachment. The Senate will likely take up the trade legislation when members return to Washington after the holidays and after dealing with impeachment. USMCA is a win for Montana and America. The trade deal secures access to our top trading partners, creates 176,000 new American jobs, and increases ag exports by more than 2 billion dollars. USMCA will build upon our already strong national economy, Gianforte said in an email, adding it should have been before House members sooner. It took more than a year for Nancy Pelosi to act on this critical trade deal, leaving Montana farmers, ranchers, manufacturers, and business owners waiting, Gianforte said. By putting her partisan impeachment sham ahead of a deal with America's top trading partners, she revealed her misplaced priorities. I'm grateful to Speaker Pelosi for finally stepping up and doing her job. The Associated Press reported that Pelosi and colleagues won key concessions from the Trump administration. The deal is expected to have only a modest impact on the economy, AP said. But it is an agreement sought by farmers, ranchers and business owners anxious to move past the months of trade tensions that have complicated spending and hiring decisions. Trump made tearing up the North American Free Trade Agreement a hallmark of his presidential run in 2016 as he tried to win over working-class voters, AP reported. In May, Gianforte asked Pelosi to drop her opposition to USMCA and work with the White House to move the trade deal forward, noting the requirements set by both Democrats and Republicans had been met. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
