John Thune, R-South Dakota, intends to crack down on robocalls by requiring phone companies to authenticate incoming calls and allow people to block robocalls for free, according to a news release from the office of Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester. The bill is cosponsored by 84 senators and 53 representatives. Robocalls are a nuisance that has become the new normal for most Americans and we've got to stop them, Tester said in the release. Today is a huge step forward to do that. The bill requires the Federal Communications Commission to create rules to help curb calls and texts from unauthenticated numbers by mandating when providers can block calls and creating a verification process to authenticate calls. It also gives the FCC more time to catch and punish those who intentionally break the law, according to a news release from Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines' office. Montanans are tired of being bombarded day and night by illegal robocalls, Daines said in the release. I look forward to President Trump signing this bill into law. The bill passed in the House on Dec. 4 with a vote of 417 to 3. After its passing, Montana Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte said in a news release that the bill gives consumers tools to block illegal robocalls at no cost. It also holds illegal robocallers accountable for their scams, including higher fines and more prison time, Gianforte said. For a time, Montana did have a ban blockingcertain types of robocalls, including calls that tried to sell things, ones soliciting information and gathering data, and ones connected to political campaigns. However, in September, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the state's ban on political campaign robocalls violated the First Amendment by banning calls by content, according to theNational Law Review. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
