https://gianforte.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/gianforte-marks-national-suicide-awareness-month Gianforte Marks National Suicide Awareness Month 2020-09-30 2020 2020-09 Republican Senate MT Greg Gianforte G000584 gianforte.house.gov     legacy Congressman Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) today spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to mark National Suicide Awareness Month. Unfortunately, Montanans are all too familiar with the epidemic of suicide, Gianforte said. As we have faced this ongoing public health and economic crisis, the demand for mental health services has grown. In Gallatin County, crisis response therapists have experienced a higher volume of calls. Each month, they receive more calls than the month before from people needing help. Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed two suicide prevention bills from Gianforte. Gianforte's bipartisan National Suicide Hotline Designation Act makes 9-8-8 the universal telephone number for the national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system, which operates through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Veterans Crisis Line. Gianforte introduced the bill in August 2019 with U.S. Reps. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas), Chris Stewart (R-Utah), and Seth Moulton (D-Mass.). Gianforte's bipartisan Campaign to Prevent Suicide Act sets up an educational campaign to raise awareness for 9-8-8, suicide prevention resources, and more effective discourse on how to prevent suicide. Gianforte introduced the legislation with U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) in October 2019. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
