Ahead of the House vote, Gianforte described to lawmakers one of the health care challenges many Montanans face. Far too many Montanans can't afford the prescription drugs they need. They shouldn't have to leave the pharmacy counter emptyhanded because costs are too high, Gianforte said. Gianforte pivoted to his bill as one way to bring down prescription drug prices. To lower costs, we need more transparency in our health care system. We need to shine a light into the opaque drug pricing process. Our commonsense, bipartisan bill before the House today will shine that much needed light, Gianforte said. Download video of Gianforte's remarks HERE The bipartisan Payment Commission Data Act will provide access to greater drug pricing data for the Medicare Payment Advisory Committee (MedPAC) and the Medicaid and CHIP Payment Advisory Committee (MACPAC). Access to the data will allow for more comprehensive drug pricing analysis, improving information lawmakers can use to address rising drug prices. MedPAC and MACPAC are independent, nonpartisan think tanks that advise Congress on health issues, much like the Congressional Budget Office advises Congress on fiscal and budgetary issues. Gianforte introduced the bill, H.R. 1781, with Reps. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), Tom O'Halleran (D-Ariz.), Tom Rice (R-S.C.), and Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) in March 2019. In April 2019, the legislation passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee, on which Gianforte serves. The measure moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration and action. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
