"Today's votes were important steps towards getting Congress back in the business of exercising our constitutional authority to declare — and end — wars," said Golden. "The House and Senate had ignored the ‘57 and ‘91 AUMFs for so long that they were largely forgotten. That's a dangerous amount of power to leave any president. Now that the House has passed legislation to clear these AUMFs off the books, we should debate and develop a replacement of the 2001 AUMF." Rep. Golden was an original cosponsor of the two bipartisan AUMF repeal bills that passed last night: H.R. 3261, introduced by Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), which would repeal the 1991 Congressional authorization for the Gulf War. H.R. 3283, introduced by Rep. Peter Meijer (MI-03), which would repeal an open-ended Cold War-era authorization of force in the Middle East. Both bills now head to the Senate after passing the House by voice vote. In March, Golden, Spanberger, and Meijer were original cosponsors of Rep. Mike Gallagher's (WI-08) H.R. 2014, the Outdated AUMF Repeal Act, which would repeal the 1991 AUMF, the 1957 AUMF, and the 2002 Iraq War AUMF.
