In the activity celebrating the Contributions of Jaime Bentez, through a proclamation delivered for Congressional Record, Gonzlez Coln highlighted the important role of Jaime Bentez in making possible the educational development, as rector and first president of the University of Puerto Rico, intellectual development and leadership of thousands of Puerto Rican and Latino students nationally and internationally. He was a founding member of the Association of Caribbean Universities (UNICA), the "International Association of University Presidents", and the "National Association of Latino Elected Officials" (NALEO). In turn, Don Jaime Bentez made a significant contribution to the development of Puerto Rico and its Constitution, presiding over the Commission that drafted the Puerto Rico Bill of Rights. Benitez represented the people of Puerto Rico Congress, from 1973 to 1976. It also made it possible for the University of Puerto Rico to become a top-level university, serve communities throughout the island of Puerto Rico and bring talent from around the world to teach and learn in Puerto Rico. "The legacy of Jaime Bentez deserves national recognition for his contributions to American society, such as paving the training of professionals who actively participate in the social, cultural and economic development of the communities of the United States and Puerto Rico," said Gonzlez Coln. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
