First Lieutenant Andres Zermeño, answered the call to serve, joining the United States Army in 2008. Three years later, while serving in “Operation Enduring Freedom,” he was killed in action while on patrol in Shekhabad, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered from a rocket-propelled grenade. He was 26 years old and left behind a wife and two children. “Lieutenant Zermeño gave his life to protect his family, his hometown, and his country. We must remember his name and celebrate his legacy. I am proud to sponsor this legislation and honor Lieutenant Zermeño’s sacrifice and memory,” said Congressman Gonzalez. During his funeral mass at St. Mary’s University, his friends, family, and colleagues remembered him as a true leader, a caring friend, and a devoted family man.
