In response, Rep. Ral M. Grijalva issued the following statement: Once again, Republican cowardice in the face of Trump's temper tantrums have shut down the government. For a party that preaches so-called fiscal responsibility, House Republicans did not bat an eye to shut down the government to fund Trump's disastrous, ineffective border wall. The last major government shutdown in 2013 cost the economy $24 billion over a 16 day periodapproximately $1.5 billion a dayand created numerous hardships for America's workers. This shutdown leaves almost 800,000 federal workers working without pay right in the midst of the holidays. Trump may have no concept of living paycheck-to-paycheck, but for numerous federal workers and their families, that's the reality. This shutdown is the latest example of the Republican Party's inability to govern.
