Grijalva (AZ-07) introduced a bipartisan House Resolution recognizing National Native American Heritage Month and celebrating the cultural, historical, and economic contributions of Native American communities across the United States. The resolution reaffirms the federal government’s commitment to Tribal sovereignty, self-governance, and the nation-to-nation relationship between the United States and Tribal Nations. The resolution is co-sponsored by Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK-04), Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS-03), Rep. Nicholas Begich (R-AK), Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM-03), Rep. Julie Fedorchak (R-ND), Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM-01), and Rep. David Joyce (R-OH-14). “Arizona is home to 22 sovereign Tribal Nations whose cultures, languages, and histories have shaped our state,” said Congresswoman Grijalva. “As we celebrate National Native American Heritage Month, we honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of Native communities across the country. Right now it is essential we recommit ourselves to respecting Tribal sovereignty, protecting Native languages, and ensuring that federal policy reflects the needs of Indian Country. This starts with supporting tribal self-determination, strengthening our Nation-to-Nation relationships, and requiring a meaningful consultation process. That is the work I am committed to on the Natural Resources Committee and across Congress.” The resolution also highlights the rich heritage of Native Americans, their enduring traditions, and their profound influence on the development of the United States – from language and agriculture to governance and democratic principles. It also acknowledges the service of Native Americans in the Armed Forces, their role as code talkers during World Wars I and II, and their continued leadership in education, entrepreneurship, the arts, and public life.
