She released this statement: The danger posed by a gun in the hands of a domestic violence abuser is not a new occurrence. Last year, this violence took the lives of 52 Wisconsinites including that of Zina Daniel, the victim who was shot to death by her estranged husband while working at a spa in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Hundreds more across our nation were fatally shot by an intimate partner. As a strong advocate for women, particularly women who have suffered through domestic violence, I remain committed to doing all I can to prevent these tragedies. Today I introduced the Domestic Violence Criminal Disarmament Act, which would encourage states to adopt baseline policies that (1.) require officials to routinely take into account whether a gun is present in a serious domestic violence situation and (2.) take steps to protect the victim by removing the gun from the equation if it is illegally possessed or determined to be a threat to the victim. As we continue to debate our budgetary priorities, the farm bill, comprehensive immigration reform, and other important issues, I encourage my colleagues to join me in my fight to turn domestic violence victims into survivors.
