The letter was submitted as a public comment on the Trump Administration's Proposed Rule, Inadmissibility on Public Charge Grounds, which would expand the list of federal programs considered in the public charge determination to include non-cash assistance programs established by Congress to protect individuals and families from poverty, provide a basic living standard, and support work. The Trump Administration's proposed rule serves no purpose other than to terrify immigrants, refugees, and their families, said Congresswoman Moore. The changes contradict Congressional intent and threaten access to essential health, nutrition, and security for millions of vulnerable families. I will not stand by and allow the Trump Administration to continue these hateful scare tactics, and I am proud to join with many of my democratic colleagues pushing back against this harmful proposal. In today's letter, Congresswoman Moore wrote in part: The Proposed Rule would have dire consequences for immigrant families who have been part of our communities for decades, while being assured repeatedly by U.S. immigration officials that partaking in benefit programs would not hinder their eligibility to become lawful residents. The authority to institute such drastic changes in law resides solely with Congress, not the Administration. It is a contradiction of our American values to wreak havoc in the lives of millions who help weave our diverse cultural and economic framework.
