For instance, this legislation allows DHS to continue immigration operations in sensitive locations, such as schools, places of worship, and hospitals. It fails to require immigration officials to wear identification or to limit the use of masks by those officials unless absolutely necessary. It doesn’t secure strong requirements that ICE comply with use of force guidelines to address too many instances of excessive use of force. The bill also wouldn’t block the detention of American citizens. At the end of the day, this bill fails to implement any meaningful reforms that would protect our communities while still allowing for enforcement of our immigration laws. Without these and other key reforms that Congress can enact using its power of the purse, I remain concerned that these abuses will only continue in our communities. We owe it to our communities to do more.
