On Thursday evening, Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) voted for and the U.S. House passed a bill that will bring down healthcare costs for more than 500,000 New Mexicans. The Lower Drug Costs Now Act, H.R. 3, gives Medicare the power to negotiate directly with drug companies, and the lower prices negotiated by Medicare will be transparent so that private insurance companies can make the same prices available to their consumers. It also creates a new $2000 out-of-pocket limit on prescription drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries. Everyone deserves access to quality, lifesaving medications without breaking the bank, but right now many New Mexicans are forced to choose between paying for their medication and groceries. The Lower Drug Costs Now Act will ensure that families have access to affordable health care by investing the money it saves into expanding Medicare's benefits to include dental, vision, and hearing with an added benefit of combatting the opioid crisis that impacts so many New Mexicans, said Congresswoman Deb Haaland. Haaland was part of a coalition of progressive members who successfully included provisions to increase the number of prescription drugs covered under the bill and is proud that the effort secured benefits for New Mexico families. In Mexico, there are 99,324 people enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan and 403,352 people enrolled in private health insurance all of whom stand to benefit fromH.R.3. For example, those living with cancer, arthritis, asthma, HIV/AIDS, and multiple sclerosis are expected to experience significant savings as a result ofH.R.3. In addition to lowering prescription drug prices,H.R.3also reinvests savings into expanding Medicare coverage for dental, vision, and hearing services for constituents in New Mexico's First Congressional District.
