Jim Hagedorn (MN-01) today issued the following statement regarding needed reforms in the congressional appropriations and government funding process: "While imperfect, the COVID relief package is a necessary lifeline for small businesses, agriculture, and familiesin the midst ofstate government-imposed shutdowns, and they will receive billions of dollars in direct aid and loans. "Of course, the best recipe for the American people is to fully reopen our businesses, schools, and society. "I have been a relentless advocate for reopening Minnesota and have not been shy about standing up to Governor Walz. He has instituted a series of arbitrary decrees that have picked winners and losers and harmed many Minnesotans in a number of ways. Governor Walz should immediately relinquish his emergency powers and begin crafting policies with our state legislature. "The packagewe voted on earlier this weekis a result of negotiations led by the White House and congressional leadership.We arrived hereafter months of political stonewalling by Speaker Pelosi and aclosed-doorprocess orchestrated by her leadership. "Something that was particularly unseemly was how Speaker Pelosi combined the bipartisan COVID relief package with an enormous continuing appropriations bill that funded a huge number of federal agencies for Fiscal Year 2021, which ends September 30, 2021. "This has created some confusion by commingling coronavirus relief with programs like State Department funding and foreign aid. "President Trump has insinuated that he may veto the legislation unless excessive foreign aid spending is eliminated. I wholeheartedly support the President's effort to cut needless spending and will encourage Republican House leadership to fight for taxpayers. "This processand the Speaker's partisan games are simplyunfitting of the People's House.Moving forward, we must commit to regular order and an appropriations process with 12 separate bills subjected to the amendment process. This will afford all of us an opportunity to ferret out unnecessary appropriations and reform government. "It alsomeans no more omnibus spending bills in the future! "As your representative, I recommit my pledge to fight forresponsiblespending, government reform, and returning power to where it should reside with the American people!I will seek out budgetary reforms and real cuts to wasteful or specialinterest driven expenditures. "For too many years,leaders of both parties in Congress have operated behind closed doors jamming through massive, irresponsible increases in government spendingat the 11thhour.It is long past time for Congress to return to regular order and100 percent transparency with the American people about how theirmoney is spent." Jim Hagedorn was elected in 2018 to represent Minnesota's First District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He grew up on his family's grain and livestock farm near Truman. Jim's father, former U.S. Congressman Tom Hagedorn (MN-02), grandfather, and great-grandfather were all southern Minnesota farmers. Jim currently resides in the rural farming community of Blue Earth.
