Henry Cuellar (D-TX). The legislation works to provide opportunities for Land Grant Universities, Historically Black Colleges & Universities, and Tribal Colleges to help in the fight against COVID-19 by expanding the Rural Health Safety Education Competitive Grants Program (RHSE). This piece of legislation will allow these institutions of higher learning to apply for grants to distribute best practices, relevant health and safety guidance, and guidelines or information to help farms, agricultural workers and others along the supply chain respond to and safely conduct business amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. "The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the need to ensure we have a safe and reliable workforce to maintain our food supply. In order to win the battle with COVID-19, we must guarantee that the most up to date and science-based information is readily accessible for community leaders, educators and rural businesses, said Congressman Hagedorn. My legislation will help guarantee that timely, relevant health and safety guidelines and information are reaching our rural workforce and communities as we work to fully reopen businesses and continue to restart and rebuild our economy." "We must protect the agricultural workers who are going into work every day during this pandemic to ensure our nation's food supply is maintained, said Congressman Cuellar. This bipartisan legislation will ensure community leaders, educators and rural businesses have the necessary resources and information to protect this essential workforce. As a senior member of the Agriculture Subcommittee on Appropriations, I am committed to fighting for safety and well-being of the agricultural industry during these unprecedented times. I want to thank Congressman Hagedorn for his leadership on this initiative." "Keeping food and agriculture workers safe during COVID-19 has been NASDA's number one priority during this pandemic. We applaud Congressmen Hagedorn and Cuellar for introducing the bipartisan Farm and Agricultural Worker Safety Education Act to help entities like state departments of agriculture better provide educational materials that will be accessible to our diverse agricultural workforce. Keeping these hard workers safe means feeding people and the economy, said Dr. Barb Glenn, CEO, National Association of State Departments of Agriculture. Jim Hagedorn was elected in 2018 to represent Minnesota's First District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He grew up on his family's grain and livestock farm near Truman. Jim's father, former U.S. Congressman Tom Hagedorn (MN-02), grandfather, and great-grandfather were all southern Minnesota farmers. Jim currently resides in the rural farming community of Blue Earth. Hagedorn brings policy experience to Capitol Hill from time spent as a congressional aide to former U.S. Congressman Arlan Stangeland (MN-07) and a congressional relations officer for two non-partisan U.S. Department of the Treasury agencies. Hagedorn serves on the House Committees on Agriculture and Small Business to promote farming, Main Street enterprises and southern Minnesota's way of life. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
