Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) joined local leaders, family and friends at Wayne County High School in Monticello, Kentucky on Saturday to salute 79 soldiers who are deploying to Southwest Asia this holiday season. In total, 300 Soldiers from the 1-623rd Field Artillery (FA) will deploy from Kentucky to support the U.S. Army Central Command's Operation Spartan Shield to maintain and strengthen partnerships with regional allies. They have trained for over a year to prepare for this deployment. "Nothing gives me greater pride than returning to the armory where I first enlisted to serve my country, and seeing the next generation of warfighters and defenders standing strong to answer the call of duty," said Congressman Rogers, Dean of the House and a veteran of the Kentucky National Guard's 623rd. "These soldiers have provided invaluable support during recent natural disasters across the Commonwealth, and now they will use their skill and training for this key mission overseas. They are not only highly trained to be a part of Task Force Spartan, but they are equipped with the most high-tech artillery and intelligence that this nation can provide. What better soldiers to guard our assets around the globe, to protect freedom and liberty for our nation and our friends abroad, than the brave members of the Kentucky National Guard?" Task Force Spartan is a unique, multi-component organization made up of active Army, National Guard, U.S Army Reserve units. Since 2011, Operation Spartan Shield, Task Force Spartan has maintained U.S. military presence in Southwest Asia where they have been involved in a range of military activities aimed at promoting regional security and stability.
