Joining me were DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson, Stonecrest City Councilman Rob Turner, School Board member Vickie Turner, retired letter carrier Dexter Brown, Georgia AFL-CIO President Charlie Fleming, members of the American Postal Workers Union and many concerned citizens. | 11Alive: Congressman speaks on the importance of USPS at Decatur rally | WSB-TV: USPS Changes Postponed | Congressman urges Georgians to support USPS in battle over funding, mail-in ballots | Lives, livelihoods and the life of our American Democracy are under threat from the president and his postmaster. That is why I am returning to Washington today to vote this weekend on Delivering for America Act, which prohibits the Postal Service from implementing any changes to operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020, and provides $25 billion in critical funding to support the Postal Service: the same level of funding recommended by the USPS Board of Governors, which is composed of 100% Trump appointees. In a time of a pandemic, the Postal Service is Election Central. Americans should not have to choose between their health and their vote. As we protect the Postal Service and access to the ballot, we continue to lead the fight for The Heroes Act as the coronavirus crisis continues to spiral further out of control. The House of Representatives cannot act alone. The Senate must also agree to pass the Heroes Act and the Delivering for America Act and President Trump must sign both bills in order for them to become law. The Senate, however, is in recess until September, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has resisted bipartisan calls to cut the recess short in order to address this crisis. Call your U.S. senators and demand that they immediately return to Washington to pass the Heroes Act as well as the Delivering for America Act so that Americans can access the life-saving resources and services so desperately needed during these challenging times. Finally, call the president to demand that he sign both bills into law.
