Johnsons Votes To Move Equal Rights Amendment Forward 2019-11-14 2019 2019-11 Democrat House GA Hank Johnson J000288 hankjohnson.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. This week, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04)attended an historic markup in House Judiciary Committee of Rep. Jackie Speier's H.J. Res.79 that facilitates the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). This landmark legislation will ensure equal Constitutional protection for all American citizens regardless of gender, said Johnson. Despite years of progress towards true gender equality, the need for the Equal Rights Amendment is greater today than ever before. With the assault on women's rights in full gear, now is the time for our voices to be heard speak out, stand up and be counted. With the successful Virginia state legislature elections last week, Virginia is expected to be the last state needed to ratify the ERA, building further momentum to finally make women equal to men under the eyes of the law. Background: The ERA will enshrine women's equality in the Constitution by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex. When Congress passed the ERA in 1972, it attached an arbitrary seven-year ratification deadline, which was later extended three more years. By 1982, only 35 states out of the required 38 had voted to ratify the amendment. In the past two years, grassroots campaigns have successfully secured ratification votes in Nevada and Illinois. Notwithstanding the expired deadline, ratification is now one state away from 38. So far, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia have NOT ratified the ERA. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
