Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) applauded the decision confirmed today by the Maryland Board of Elections to provide for an in-person polling location on Smith Island. On election night, after the polling station closes, ballots from Smith Island voters will be taken to the mainland for counting. Previously, in August, Congressman Harris wrote to state officials expressing his concern that Smith Island would not have an in-person polling location this coming November. Dr. Harris urged these officials to allow residents of the small island in Somerset County to cast a ballot in person, especially given Governor Hogan's comments that Marylanders should have the opportunity to vote in person. Congressman Harris made the following statement: "I am very pleased that Smith Island will now have an in-person polling location this fall. Local residents and elected officials, especially Senator Carozza, deserve credit for helping to provide the ability for Smith Island residents to vote locally, without fear of interruption by weather that might impede their travel to the mainland, thereby avoiding the potential disenfranchisement of my constituents' voting rights on election day." | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-06-28T00:28:51Z |
