Included in the House Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill for FY2014 was an amendment supported by Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler that boosted the bill’s Hanford Nuclear Site cleanup by $20 million. In June, Jaime secured the support of the Energy and Water subcommittee chairman for increased funding for Hanford cleanup during the bill’s passage through the House Appropriations Committee. Earlier this week, she worked alongside the sponsor of the amendment, Congressman Doc Hastings (R-WA), on the floor to earn the successful adoption of the Hanford cleanup funding. Watch the video of her floor speech here. “The clean-up of the Hanford site is not only a legal obligation of the federal government, it’s a moral obligation to keep our citizens, wildlife and environment safe,” said Jaime. “I want to thank Congressman Hastings for his leadership on Hanford cleanup, and I’ll continue fighting to keep the federal commitment to this effort in place.” Small Port Dredging Also included in the bill was a provision Jaime had advocated for that would designate $30 million out of the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund for the purpose of small port dredging. Jaime spoke on the floor to highlight the importance of securing this money for the nation’s small ports. In Southwest Washington, ports in Pacific and Wahkiakum County are in jeopardy economically due to a lack of maintenance dredging that keeps its waterways passable for commercial shipping. “Our small ports and channels are as important to our coastal communities as our highways or rail system – these waterways are their economic lifelines,” said Jaime. “When ships cannot enter these ports, our coastal communities are choked off and we risk losing precious jobs.
