When a sizeable earthquake or other disaster impacts Southwest Washington, it's essential our families and seniors can depend on working electricity to help keep them safe, Herrera Beutler said. I'm pleased to join this bipartisan solution with Congressman Lamb to improve the reliability of our electric grid in the event of natural disasters and cyberthreats, and to improve emergency response time. The electric grid powers the lives of all Americans we need to invest in the research to ensure our constituents, companies, and defense installations have electricity when they need it most, Lamb said. This commonsense legislation supports the research programs to adopt new technologies, improve the environment and create family-sustaining jobs in the energy economy. The Grid Modernization Research and Development Act of 2019 includes a broad array of research and development programs aimed at increasing the security of the grid while ensuring these programs reflect the evolving energy sector. It accomplishes this by extending the Smart Grid Regional Demonstration initiative and authorizing a research, development, and demonstration program focused on: Enhancing grid resilience and emergency response; Designing and developing advanced controls, operations, monitoring, and visualization tools for the grid; and Developing hybrid energy systems. This research will ensure a wide array of generation resources can continue providing reliable electricity to the country and better integrate buildings and electric vehicles into existing grid infrastructure.
