Letter to the Editor: Advocating for the Unborn By Congressman French Hill Volume 108 | Number 43 Page 10 Advocating for the Unborn Thank you for your editorial titled,The Infanticide States Aren't Talking About, published in the September 21, 2019 issue, highlighting the tragic state laws facilitating born-alive abortion. In January of this year, New York signed the Reproductive HealthAct into law. This law makes born-alive abortion legal if the doctor makes a reasonable and good-faith judgment that the abortion will benefit the pregnant woman's mental or physical health. Virginia's governor followed suit, signing into law similar legislation that allows third-trimester abortions in cases of deformities or unviable infants. Americans have made it clear that they are repulsed by these statutes that have legalized infanticide. Today, we face a morally defining moment as a nation where we must choose that, once born, every life deserves equal protection under the law. That is why I cosponsored the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, legislation that requires health care practitioners who are present at a live birth to exercise skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the childthe same degree of care that would be offered to any other child born prematurely. All Members of Congress should be able to agree that, once born, all children deserve protection under the law.Despite the efforts of House Republicans, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has blocked this piece of legislation from coming up for a vote. In total, she has refused a request to allow a vote on this bill more than 80 times. House Republicans have a chance to break through this obstruction and force a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act by signing a discharge petition.So far, 203 membersRepublican and Democrathave signed onto this effortjust 15 shy of the required 218.
