If the U.S. is already collecting millions of dollars on imported tobacco products, we should put it towards fighting cancer and saving lives. Last year alone, under my bill, that would have meant roughly $24 million for cancer research, investments in innovative treatments, and ultimately, more hope for families battling cancer. I urge my colleagues to support this commonsense solution and for it to be considered on the floor as soon as possible." — Congresswoman Ashley Hinson The Cancer Research Trust Fund Act would: Direct 10% of customs and duties already collected on tobacco imports into a dedicated Cancer Research Trust Fund. Prioritize pediatric and rare cancer research, including early detection, prevention, innovative treatments and therapies, and research and development. Require collaboration between the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and Department of War through the Defense Health Program. In fiscal year 2025, approximately $242.8 million in customs and duties were collected on imported tobacco and tobacco substitute products. Under Hinson’s bill, approximately $24.3 million would have been directed toward cancer research. Hinson has made expanding cancer research and improving early detection a priority during her time in Congress. Her legislation builds on Iowa’s recent investments in cancer research using revenue from the state’s vape tax.
