After the House Judiciary Committee approved a patent reform bill, Congressman George Holding (NC-13) released the following statement: Patent litigation abuse jeopardizes the integrity of our legal system and the vibrancy of our economy. Companies large and small are consistently faced with the threat of abusive patent suits - costing them money that could be used to create jobs. Simply put, these abusive suits are a burden on our economy and lead to tens of billions of dollars a year in settlements and litigation costs - money that could be better spent creating new jobs and solving problems. Our nation's innovators boost our economy, and it is wrong for patent trolls to take advantage of them. The money companies have to use for settlements and litigation with patent trolls could instead be put towards research, technology, and hiring. That's why I cosponsored the Innovation Act, to defend our patent system against fraud and abuse. It contains reforms that will help business large and small, while preserving the integrity of America's patent system. The Innovation Act offers security for our innovators and job creators, and consequentially, our economy as a whole. Background: H.R. 3309, the Innovation Act was introduced by Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (VA-06) and cosponsored by Congressman Holding.
