After Reuters released a damning report on Air Force Base housing contractor, Congresswoman Kendra Horn vowed to continue her work advocating for base families and holding the company accountable. Since she took office, Congresswoman Horn has been working to expose the dangerous living conditions Tinker's families are forced to endure. At Tinker and across the country, privatized housing has deteriorated and subjected families to raw sewage backups, vermin infestations, asbestos exposure and mold. On Tuesday, Reuters released a report on the contractor, Balfour Beatty, which alleged the company knew about those conditions and worked to hide them from the Air Force. According to the report, the company maintained two sets of records to hide the homes' damage and the company's repair backlog. Because the Air Force falsely believed the company complied with repair deadlines and other requirements, the company earned millions of dollars in incentives. This blatant disregard for our service members and their families is unconscionable, Congresswoman Horn said. No one deserves to live in these conditions, but especially not the families putting everything on the line for our country. It's not only devastating; it's a threat to our nation's security and readiness. That is why I immediately took this issue to Readiness Subcommittee Chairman John Garamendi. Our subcommittee and the House Armed Services Committee had already known about unacceptable problems in base housing, but we're still learning the sheer extent. We're going to get to the bottom of this. And we're going to hold Balfour Beatty and the other contractors to account. Congresswoman Horn has been working to protect families in base housing since she took office. An Oklahoma brought the issue to the Congresswoman during her first town hall. Congresswoman Horn used her position on the House Armed Services' Readiness Subcommittee to bring top lawmakers to the base to investigate the issue. She also used her position on the committee to create new protections for these families in the National Defense Reauthorization Act, which create a bill of rights for the families, ensure they have an independent advocate on site, and bans non-disclosure agreements that force families to suffer in secrecy. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
