The Blue Dog Coalition focuses on issues related to fiscal responsibility and national security. Friday morning, the coalition released a package of legislative proposals in response to Russia's attack against the U.S. political system and attempts to interfere in the 2016 election. The solutions are based primarily on a set of 11 bills endorsed by the Coalition and have earned bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. Congresswoman Horn offered the following remarks: Election security is, simply put, not a partisan issue. It is a matter of national defense. As Blue Dogs, we are committed to ensuring America's safety, and we know that protecting our country goes beyond supporting our troops it must include secure and fair elections. Congress must protect our electoral process from foreign governments and other bad actors who seek to undermine our democracy. It's clear Russia acted to interfere in our past two elections. Congressional inaction has emboldened our adversaries. We must sanction Russia for its actions in 2016 and 2018, and we must find a way to deter our adversaries from interfering in the future. We must close the loopholes that allow foreign entities to buy political ads and make it illegal to maliciously hack into our election systems. Our systems need more commonsense security features, like paper ballot backups a safeguard Oklahoma already implemented. As a nation, we must send a clear signal to the world: We will meet any attempt to undermine American democracy with swift and severe consequences. And anyone who tries to cross these lines will have a price to pay. If we are going to send a united message, we can't stand divided.
