Time and time again people tell me about the crushing weight of their student loan debt, Congresswoman Horn said. It is preventing people from starting new businesses, buying homes, or starting their family because they couldn't afford to do that and pay their student loans. You shouldn't have to mortgage your future to have one. I hear these struggles from hard-working, responsible, and dedicated Oklahomans. They are not asking for a hand out but are simply asking for the rules of the game to be fair. Student loan companies shouldn't be getting rich off the backs of poor students. Congresswoman Horn introduced has introduced four pieces of legislation that will reduce the undue burden Oklahomans of pursuing an education. This legislation is just the most recent in the suite of bills she has co-sponsored since taking office. The Guaranteeing Respite After College Ends (GRACE) Act prevents student loan companies from charging compounding interest on students while they're in school and for the first 6 months after they leave. This ensures that every federal student loan borrower doesn't have interest accruing while in school. The Student Loan Accrual Support and Help (SLASH) Act prohibits student loan companies from charging arbitrary interest rates. This bill ties those rates to the treasury and caps them over time. Under current law, some student borrowers are paying interest rates twice as high as they're paying on their cars and mortgages. The Better Service to Borrowers Act of 2019 requires student loan companies have a standardized practices manual. It creates requirements for transparency that will prevent companies from hiding information such as long-term interest costs and repayment options from their borrowers. The Public Service Pays Off Act reforms the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Under current law, borrowers have to make payments for 10 consecutive years before their loans are forgiven. This bill ensures borrowers can have their loans forgiven in increments over time instead of waiting for the all-or-nothing mark after 10 years. In addition to those bills, Congresswoman Horn has co-sponsored numerous bills, including ones that: make sure borrowers can discharge student debt during bankruptcy as they can medical or credit card debt, give borrowers tax relief on their student loan payments, ensure borrowers aren't charged income taxes on the student loan assistance their employers provide. We need reasonable solutions that help Oklahomans work their way out of the student debt crisis, Congresswoman Horn said. To discuss the crisis, how it affects Oklahoma and what we can do about it, Congresswoman Horn will host a town hall at 6.pm. Aug. 29 at the Oklahoma State University Oklahoma City Student Center.
