One of Congress' most powerful servicemember advocates, Congressman John Garamendi, will tour Tinker Air Force base with Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-05) on Friday. Congressman Garamendi, the chairman on the House Armed Services' Readiness Subcommittee, and a bipartisan group of lawmakers and officials will spend the day on site April 12. Tinker is critical to our nation's security and readiness. It houses the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, a 62-building maintenance campus where crews work on Air Force planes, including the KC-135, E-3, B-52 and B-1 bombers, and the C-130 Hercules. The 8.2 million-square-foot facility is the largest air logistics center of 10 belonging to the U.S. Air Force Materiel Command. The Air Force, Oklahoma City and Oklahoma County jointly invested $48 million in a 158-acre parcel for a maintenance facility for the KC-46A, Boeing aircraft tankers that refuel planes in flight maintenance. That is one of many examples highlighting how Tinker is a critical partner in our community, Congresswoman Horn said. Tinker AFB is one of our state's biggest economic and national security assets. It employs more than 30,000 people many of whom live in Congressional District 5 and provides $1.7 billion in salaries annually. During one of the Congresswoman's January town halls, an Oklahoma family shared a troubling story. The privatized housing they lived in on Tinker AFB was substandard and causing them significant health problems. I immediately took that back to Chairman Garamendi, Congresswoman Horn said. Now, the full Armed Services committee in each chamber in the Democratic House and Republican Senate have been working on it. In addition to maintenance backlogs, the units have block mold, pests, lead paint and many other dangerous defects. The committee has been addressing similar privatized housing problems at bases across the country. Congresswoman Horn said that the collaboration shouldn't come as a surprise. These are not partisan issues, Congresswoman Horn said. Not only is it a quality of life issue for those servicemembers and their families as they sacrifice for our country, it's a national security and readiness threat. Chairman Garamendi has been a strong advocate on this issue, and I'm honored to bring him to our base. I'm grateful Congresswoman Horn brought Tinker's issues to my attention, and I'm honored to visit the base on Friday, Chairman Garamendi said. Addressing this problem will require a strategic and long-term response. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
