Congresswoman Kendra Horn voted Thursday for a bipartisan bill to ensure the government remains properly funded and lowers the risk of a second government shutdown this year. The bipartisan budget agreement that the House, Senate, and President agreed on passed the House by an overwhelming margin, 284-149. The bill creates financial certainty for Congress moving forward. When this Congress was sworn-in, we inherited the longest government shutdown in American history, Congresswoman Horn said. I vowed then to do everything in my power to end that government shutdown and prevent another one from ever happening. To that end, this bill helps eliminate the potential for another government shutdown during this Congress. Our military is still recovering from the 3 percent budget cuts that were put in place during the 2011 sequester. Without a new bipartisan budget agreement, our military and nonmilitary programs would face even more dangerous, catastrophic cuts an 11 percent budget cut, equaling $71 billion in military spending and $55 billion in nonmilitary. The budget agreement replaces these destructive cuts with a realistic budgetary foundation so that Congress, through its annual appropriations bills, can make critical investments in our nation's infrastructure and people without the threat of a sequester. This foundation gives Congress the budgetary flexibility it needs to pass annual appropriations bills and prevent another government shutdown. We needed to pass this budget agreement to avoid drastic federal funding cuts to Tinker Air Force Base and the FAA's Mike Monroney Center as well as to healthcare, education, and other important programs Oklahomans rely on, Congresswoman Horn said. This bill is far from perfect, but it protects these vital programs while supporting our military funding.
