This week, leadership in the House of Representatives announced that Congresswoman Kendra Horn's Great American Outdoors Act would receive a vote this July. This bipartisan legislation would preserve and protect our nation's public lands, provide permanent and full funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), and address the nearly $12 billion maintenance backlog in our national parks and other land management agencies. Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5) introduced the Great American Outdoors Act earlier this month along with a bipartisancoalitionof six Republicans and six Democrats. In Oklahoma our public lands are a place for family gatherings,exploration,learning, and economic opportunity. They foster healthy economies, healthy ecosystems, and healthy people, saidCongresswoman Horn. Each year in Oklahoma,outdoor recreation supports97,000 jobs statewideand generates billions of dollars in wages and consumer spending. I am excited to see thishistoric,bipartisan legislationto protect our public lands and permanently fund the LWCF come up for a vote.We must protect our great outdoors for this and future generations to enjoy. The House will consider the Great American Outdoors Act under a rule on the Floor during the work period at the end of July, saidMajority Leader Steny Hoyer.This bipartisan bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 73-25, will permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and address the maintenance backlog at our national parks. I thank Natural Resources Committee Chairman Raul Grijalva for his long-time leadership on this important issue, as well as Reps. Joe Cunningham, T.J. Cox, Kendra Horn, Jared Golden,MikieSherrill, and Xochitl Torres Small, for introducing the Great American Outdoors Act in the House. I also am appreciative of Rep. Mike Simpson for his work as lead Republican cosponsor of this bipartisan measure and for working to broaden its support in the House. Should it be enacted, the Great American Outdoors Act would be Congresswoman Horn's 16thbill to be signed into law by President Donald Trump. Other legislation Congresswoman Horn has fought to pass includePaycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act,Student Veteran Coronavirus Response Act,and the NDAA Tenant's Bill of Rights. The LWCF program is funded by non-taxpayer dollars derived from Outer Continental Shelf lease revenues and awarded through federal matching grants administered by the National Park Service.LWCFhas funded over1,500 projects in Oklahomafromthe development oflarge parks to small neighborhood playgrounds. LWCF funds have gone to parks and public landsincluding Lake Hefner,HaferPark, and theOklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden.
