On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the Great American Outdoors Act, bipartisan legislation to preserve and protect our nation's public lands. Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5) helped lead a bipartisan coalition of six Republicans and six Democrats to introduce the Great American Outdoors Act last month. The bill would provide permanent and full funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and address the nearly $12 billion maintenance backlog in our national parks and other land management agencies. In Oklahoma our public lands are a place for family gatherings, exploration, and discovery. They foster healthy economies, healthy ecosystems, and healthy people, said Congresswoman Horn. Each year in Oklahoma, outdoor recreation supports 97,000 jobs statewide and generates billions of dollars in wages and consumer spending. Today's bipartisan vote to pass the Great American Outdoors Act is a big win in our fight to protect America's public lands. We must defend our great outdoors for this and future generations to enjoy. Should it be enacted, the Great American Outdoors Act would be Congresswoman Horn's 16th bill to be signed into law by President Donald Trump. Congresswoman Horn has introduced and passed legislation including the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act, the Student Veteran Coronavirus Response Act, and the NDAA Tenant's Bill of Rights. LWCF has funded over 100 public lands projects in Oklahoma's 5th District from large parks to small neighborhood playgrounds. LWCF funds have gone to parks and public lands including Lake Hefner, the Martin Park Nature Center, Hafer Park, and the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden. According to the Oklahoma Outdoor Recreation Economy Report, 64 percent of Oklahoma residents participate in outdoor recreation each year.
