The ceremony included posting of the colors by the Putnam City High School JROTC, a City of Edmond proclamation declaring August 30th Jerry McCreery Day presented by Edmond American Legion Post 111 Commander Ken Wyatt and a Certificate of Service in World War II presented by Oklahoma American Legion Commander Don Roane. Following the ceremony, the American Legionled a drive-by parade in Mr. McCreery's honor. Photos and video of the ceremony are availablehere. It was an incredible honor to present Mr. McCreery with his World War II Victory Medal. said Congresswoman Horn. We owe Mr. McCreery and our World War II veterans a debt that cannot fully be repaid for their service to our nation. I'm proud that we were able to ensure Mr. McCreery received his long-overdue Victory Medal. I'm grateful for the Department of the Navy, the City of Edmond, the American Legion Department of Oklahoma, the Edmond American Legion, and the Putnam City High School JROTC for making today's presentation and celebration possible. The medal, which began as a service ribbon, was established by Congress on July 6, 1945. The ribbon transitioned to a medal following the end of World War II and was awarded to any member of the United States military who served on active duty or as a reservist between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946. Through veteran outreach efforts, Congresswoman Horn's office learned that Mr. McCreery never actually received his Victory Medal. Working with the Department of the Navy, Congresswoman Horn secured the medal. Mr. McCreery courageously enlisted in the Navy in January 1946 at age 17 and served on the USS Shangri La, an aircraft carrier stationed out of San Diego, California. Mr. McCreery served honorably and with distinction in the Pacific front, where he and his unit were integral to the stability of the region. Mr. McCreery personally witnessed the test of a nuclear bomb in Bikini Atoll in 1946. Mr. McCreery finished his service in 1947 and was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Fireman Second and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal.
