U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) is applauding a petition filed this week by community groups urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to require Chemours Co. to fund PFAS research. The petition asks the EPA to use the authority granted to it under the 2016 overhaul of the Toxic Substances Control Act, which Rep. Hudson helped become law as a member of the Environment Subcommittee in the U.S. House. "When I helped overhaul the Toxic Substances Control Act, I wanted to ensure we could hold companies like Chemours accountable on PFAS. I applaud this petition from groups throughout our community urging the EPA to use this authority and I will continue to fight to keep our drinking water safe from chemicals like GenX,"said Rep. Hudson. The Chemours Co. chemical production facility in Fayetteville has been found to be the source of PFAS chemicals, including GenX, in drinking water throughout the Cape Fear region. As cited by the petition, the EPA was granted new authority under the Toxic Substances Control Act in 2016 to order chemical manufacturers to conduct research on the health and environmental impacts of chemicals they produce. The petition was filed by the Center for Environmental Health, Cape Fear River Watch, Clean Cape Fear, Democracy Green, Toxic Free NC, and the NC Black Alliance. Read the petitionhere. In August, Rep. Hudson invited EPA Administrator Wheeler to Fayetteville to hear directly from community leaders on this issue and urged further action on GenX. In addition to working on the Toxic Substances Control Act in 2016, as well as the PFAS Action Act this year, Rep.
