Jose Serrano (D-N.Y.) and Will Hurd's (R-Texas) legislation, the National Museum of the American Latino Act. The bill takes the first step in establishing the National Museum of the American Latino within the Smithsonian Institution. To fully understand American history, we have to understand all our history. That includes the contributions of the many Latinos, past and present, who have had a tremendous impact on our nation's history and culture, said Hurd. After more than 20 years of work, we were able to get this bill unanimously through the House, and today we reach another milestone with its approval through this year's funding bill. I am proud to be a leader in this effort, and I look forward to the day when the stories of my constituents are forever memorialized for millions of expected visitors from all over the world to see. As lead Republican cosponsor on the bill in the House, Hurd ushered its unanimous passage in July. Hurd has long been a strong proponent of establishing a museum of the American Latino to permanently honor the contributions Latinos have made to our nation. In November, Hurd wrote a letter with Serrano to the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration urging passage of the legislation. Earlier this year, Hurd testified before the Committee on House Administration on the need for a National Museum on the American Latino, and, in September of last year, Hurd penned a column during Hispanic Heritage Month urging passage of this legislation.
