Wilkerson served with the U.S. Army’s Battery G, 59th Coast Artillery Regiment, in the Philippine Islands. Captured by Japanese forces on April 9, 1942, he endured more than two years as a prisoner of war before making the ultimate sacrifice on October 24, 1944. “Private First Class John T.
