Franken Obstructing Nomination of Justice Stras f t # e Washington, September 5, 2017 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jason Lewis (MN-02) issued the following statement after Senator Al Franken refused to return a ‘blue slip’ to the Senate Judiciary Committee to allow the nomination of Justice David Stras to proceed: “Senator Franken’s decision to withhold a blue slip from Justice Stras denies an eminently qualified jurist a fair hearing in the Senate. By not returning his blue slip, Franken went beyond simple opposition to the nomination and is actively shutting down debate. Chairman Grassley is well within his rights to proceed with a hearing on a nominee that the American Bar Association unanimously called ‘well-qualified’, their highest rating. It’s no surprise that a Republican Administration nominated a judge whose philosophy differs from Franken’s. To feign outrage at that ignores the many decisions that Stras has made which simply respect precedent, as well as his votes with the majority on the Minnesota Supreme Court. Further, Franken is denying Minnesota a voice on the Eighth Circuit.
