https://jasonlewis.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=208 Lewis advocates for protecting constitutional rights of Americans 2018-08-30 2018 2018-08 Republican House MN Jason Lewis L000587 jasonlewis.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Jason Lewis (MN-02) issued the following statement after participating in a criminal justice policy event yesterday afternoon, discussing the importance of criminal justice reform and what has been done at both local and federal levels to do so. Criminal justice reform is key to protecting the constitutional rights of Americans. With more than 4,500 federal crimes on the book, the federal government has overextended its power into state jurisdictions and doubled down on mandatory minimums which neglect to take unique situations in to account when sentencing. These misguided policies have fed into a cycle of recidivism, a misuse of taxpayer dollars, and a broken justice system. This is why I've worked over the past year to introduce both The Juvenile Justice Reform Act and the SAFE Justice Act with my colleague Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), why I cosponsored the Second Chance Reauthorization, supported the FIRST STEP Act, and cosponsored the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration Actto address these wrongs. I look forward to continuing to fight for much-needed criminal justice reform. Quotes in support: Jason, I want to congratulate and thank you for your leadership and outstanding work on your bipartisan Juvenile Justice Reform Act. Please let me know what I can do to help. - Congressman Rick Nolan I strongly commend the bipartisan efforts of the SAFE Justice Act the SAFE Justice Act adopts models that states have used to successfully cut prison costs and the prison population while reducing crime rates. Congress should immediately pass this bill. Hilary Shelton, Director, NAACP Local law enforcement knows we need this. Red Wing Police Chief Pohlman on the Juvenile Justice Reform Act The principles underlying the SAFE Justice Act would increase public safety, foster human dignity, and hold the Bureau of Prisons more accountable for the billions in taxpayer money it spendsThese are principles on which Liberals and Conservatives can find common ground. - David Safavian, the Deputy Director of the American Conservative Union Foundation. The [judicial] process itself is a little broken It's not just one thing or another, we need to fix this from a grass roots level all the way up to a government level.
