Meaningful juvenile justice reform has been needed for decades and I've been working hard with Rep. Scott to deliver legislation for Minnesotans and Americans across the country that gives troubled kids a second chance. After working with our counterparts in the Senate, I am pleased our consensus bill unanimously passed the House today. With today's progress, we're one step closer to implementing the long overdue changes our juvenile justice system needs. Background: The Juvenile Justice Reform Act prioritizes evidence-based practices and specifically protects at-risk groups, including girls who have survived human trafficking and pregnant juveniles. The bill gives flexibility to states and local communities to best meet the needs of delinquent youth and improve public safety, including requiring judges to consider whether it's in the interest of justice' for a juvenile awaiting an adult trial to be held in an adult detention facility. Through the JJRA, Lewis will work to improve accountability and oversight to deliver positive outcomes for our communities and protect taxpayers. Statements of support: Justice for Youth R Street Institute Fight Crime Local law enforcement knows we need this.
