Congressman Jeff Duncan (SC-03) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA): The National Defense Authorization Act has long been a bipartisan effort for Congress to fund our troops and strengthen our national security. However, unfortunately in recent years House Democrats have abandoned that long-standing process. The Left has become more interested in using critical, bipartisan provisions in the NDAA as leverage to pass non-related and radical policy priorities as part of the bill. For example, the Corporate Transparency Act provision included in the bill would burden small businesses with twenty or fewer fulltime employees with reporting additional paperwork on ownership changes to the Department of Treasury, and make it a federal crime if they fail to do so. Not only is this completely unrelated to military policy, but it also radically threatens small businesses' privacy protections. I am also extremely disappointed that language on protecting the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island was not included in this year's NDAA. While this would have been an appropriate, military-related provision, Democrats didn't even give it the time of day. South Carolinians take great pride in Parris Island and its long history of training our country's brave Marines, and I will continue fighting to protect its future and ensure its storied legacy lives on.
