The funding will be used to further research led by Dr. Katy Johansen to help improve students' spatial reasoning skills through the use of Virtual Reality training. "Juniata College is doing incredible work to empower students and find new and innovative ways to promote STEM learning, and advance scientific research" said Dr. Joyce. "I am excited to see the results of this innovative teaching model." "I'm so pleased that the National Science Foundation recognizes the imaginative work of geology professor Dr. Katy Johanesen," said Lauren Bowen, Juniata's provost and senior academic officer. "Her project further distinguishes us as a place where meaningful mentored research opportunities are provided for our students to position them at the cutting edge of technology and the future of STEM." Background: Past research has shown that the ability to visualize and manipulate information in three-dimensional space is critical for student's success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This grant funding will be used to teach STEM education and research skills while studying how efficient Virtual Reality training can be at developing a student's ability to visualize information in three-dimensional space.
