Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies, released the following statement on the massive cybersecurity breach affecting federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Energy: The cyberattack of U.S. government agencies and assets by Russian intelligence, including at the U.S. Department of Energy, through the private firm SolarWinds, is deeply troubling especially given the ongoing presidential transition of power,said Rep. Kaptur.Russia's actions are a breach of U.S. national security.Early reports highlight the serious consequences this could have for U.S. national security, though much is still unknown. Federal leaders across departments, agencies, and Congress must fully investigate what occurred, the risks, and how to prevent this from ever occurring again in the future. Although press reports indicate Russia's specific intensions are unknown, to date, its history of misinformation and overt sabotage reminds us that a united effort to combat their aggression is needed. We must work with our Allies to immediately discern what occurred and determine the appropriate response to hold all malign actors accountable. A coordinated domestic response supportedby international Allies will echo loudly and send a clear signal to Russia and all adversaries that such acts of aggression will not be tolerated. As Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, I am particularly troubled by the implications this breach may have on the Department of Energy.I urge a full investigation by both Congress and the impacted agencies.
