Congressman Joe Kennedy III today applauded the unanimous passage of his amendment to prohibit conflicts of interest in Medicare prescription drug negotiations as part of the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act. Kennedy's amendment would force the General Counsel of the Department of Health and Human Services to identify conflicts of interest that could impact drug negotiations. If a Secretary has built a career increasing prices on insulin and countless other drugs while working for a large pharma company, the profits of a former employer may influence negotiations more than the health of American patients. As we grant the Secretary of Health and Human Services the authority to negotiate drug prices, we should never question the motives behind those decisions. Because of this amendment, patients benefiting from HR 3 would know that their interests and their health will guide the negotiations taking place on their behalf.
